What is human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), and is it safe to use as a weight-loss supplement?
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone produced by women during pregnancy. It is sometimes prescribed for treating infertility and other hormone-related conditions. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are no approved HCG products for weight loss. Because it is classified as a drug, it requires a prescription and cannot be sold legally over the counter. In 2011, the FDA issued reports to this effect after it sent warning letters to manufacturers.
