CHAMP partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Training and Education Command to complete the Evidence-Based Spiritual Fitness (EBSF) Study. Researchers used qualitative and quantitative methods to assess how spiritual fitness supports resilience, well-being, and operational readiness among Marine Corps student leaders.
During the qualitative phase, study participants attended focus groups and answered open-ended questions exploring:
- Personal understanding of spirituality and spiritual fitness
- Connections between spiritual fitness, performance, and well-being
- Personal views on programs and services for optimizing spiritual fitness
The quantitative phase of the study used the Spiritual Fitness Scale (SFS) to:
- Assess participants' horizontal (meaning and purpose) and vertical (connection to a higher power) spiritual fitness
- Explore the association between SFS scores and other aspects of health, wellness, and performance
Information from this study will help inform chaplaincy practices, enhance operational readiness and resilience, and support leadership development.
